Metro construction ‘will not damage environment’

MINHANG District government yesterday promised that the latest Metro system construction plan won’t damage the environment or negatively impact on residents living nearby.

At a meeting with residents yesterday to address their concerns, the government said that construction work on the line linking Hongqiao Transportation Hub with Shanghai East Railway Station will be conducted through an underground shield to reduce its environmental impact.

A second phase of environmental evaluations will be launched covering nine Metro lines to be constructed between 2017 and 2025. The results will be released to give residents a chance to express their opinions about the project’s environmental impact.

Four uninvited residents tried to break into the meeting yesterday afternoon and were taken away by the authorities. Some of the delegates left the meeting due to the disturbance.

The first evaluation reports were publicized in February and April, and further public input will be solicited, the government said.

According to plan, the line will run along the Shanghai-Hangzhou Railway line, the Chunshen River, and the Outer Ring Road, stretching 68 kilometers with stops at eight stations.
