Metro delays plan to extend night services

A plan to extend night services on several Metro lines that was scheduled to start from April 1 has been postponed. The city’s Metro operator cited safety concerns as the reason.
A new plan would be released next month, the operator said yesterday.
It added that the Metro’s recent run of breaking traffic records had placed huge pressure on the network’s operation.
The operator is studying and further adjusting the system to deploy maintenance work after operating hours are prolonged to ensure a safe operation.
The night service extension has been long awaited by many residents. An online user called for the Metro service to Pudong airport to be extended, but the section between Guanglan Road and the airport on Line 2 is not included in current scheduled extension plans.
As of March 20, the Metro network broke traffic records on three consecutive Fridays. The surge in traffic was a result of numerous events across the city taking place, along with the warmer weather, the operator said.
According to the original extension plan, due to have begun on April 1, services on lines 1, 2, 7, 8, 9 and 10 would have been extended by an hour at night on Fridays, Saturdays and the night before national holidays.
As lines 1, 2 and 8 already had extended services on these nights by 30 minutes since last December, they would have been extended by another 30 minutes.
Lines 3, 4, 6, 11, 12, 13 are due to extend the night service by 60 minutes on the same nights from July 1.
