Metro likely to handle 6m a day during holiday
A RECORD six million passengers are expected to use Shanghai's Metro network each day during the three-day Dragon Boat Festival holiday next week, mainly due to the World Expo's attraction.
About 430,000 extra tickets have been printed to handle the big passenger flows, and the two railway stations and the Shanghai Tourist Distribution Center have been preparing for more crowds, Metro operators said today.
Tourists from other parts of China are expected to flood to see the Expo during the holiday, from next Monday to Wednesday.
Students, especially those who just finished their college entrance examination, and local residents who've already received their Expo gift packs will also join the big visitor flow.
A total 11 Metro stations on Lines 4, 7, 8, 9 and 13 are connected to the Expo site, and handle most visitors.
The peak is due to appear tomorrow, with the passenger volume surpassing 5 million every day in the next several days, officials said.
In addition, an extra 77 trains, mainly to Beijing, Wuhan, Nanjing, Wuxi, Suzhou and Hangzhou, will be added during the holiday, according to local railway authorities. Monday's rail passengers are forecast to hit 260,000.
