Metro line renovations planned
DONGCHUAN Road Station on Metro Line 5 is being expanded to accommodate a new extension to suburban Jiading District.
Another six stations on the line will also be renovated to upgrade the network and increase passenger capacity, the city’s Metro operator said.
It added that the line will continue to operate while the work is carried out, as most of the construction will be done during a 4-hour window after the network shuts down for the day.
After the work is completed, the stations’ platforms will be able to accommodate six-carriage trains, and some stations will have new escalators.
After 13 years of service, the line’s trains, signal system, fire-alert system and other equipment and facilities need to be upgraded, making the renovation job a major undertaking, the Metro operator said, adding: “The redevelopment will be even more difficult than building a new station.”
Metro Line 5 first came into operation in November 2003. Its new extension is expected to open next year.
