Metro refuses to skirt around problem
SHANGHAI'S subway operator will begin renovating escalators at Metro lines 3 and 4 stations to prevent long skirts from getting stuck.
An anti-trapping board will be installed on escalators as long skirts can easily get caught, putting wearers in danger, an official with the Shanghai Metro No. 3 Operation Co said.
Workers will complete the installation on 254 escalators by the end of July.
Stations on other Metro lines will eventually install the device on escalators, according to the operator.
The operator added that women can prevent their skirts from getting caught in escalators by lifting them up when they use them.
"If a woman gets her skirt caught in the escalator, she shouldn't push the emergency button because a sudden halt could cause other people to fall," a Metro operator employee said.
The employee said the best course of action is to alert Metro staff at the station.
They can evacuate the escalator before pushing the stop button.
A women's skirt was caught in an escalator at Zhongshan Park Station on Line 3 early last week.
Metro staffers helped the woman free her skirt, which was damaged in the incident.
A similar accident occurred on May 11 at Hongkou Football Stadium Station on Line 8.
After the woman's skirt got caught in the escalator, her colleague pushed the stop button without permission.
Nobody was injured in the incident and station workers helped free her skirt from the escalator.
