Metro section closes as Line 2 extends eastward
A SECTION of Metro Line 2 will be shut for 10 days during the Spring Festival holiday to allow work on the line's eastern extension.
Free shuttle buses will carry passengers between Longyang Road Station and Zhangjiang High-Tech Park Station in Pudong New Area, the closed section, said subway operator Shanghai Shentong Group.
Liu Chunjie, general manager for the project, said yesterday that the impact was expected be kept to a minimum as passenger volume during the holiday would be much reduced during rush hours.
The shutdown will last from February 14 to February 23.
The operator also said services on Line 2 would end an hour earlier from February 18 to 21 to allow renovation of the line's signal system. The current service ends about 10:53pm.
Line 2 is undergoing an extension at both its west and east ends to connect the city's two airports by the end of March.
In the east, the line will first extend to Guanglan Road by February 24 and will reach Pudong International Airport by March. The current terminal in the east, Zhangjiang, has about 14,000 passengers leaving or entering per hour during rush hours. That will decrease to 1,800 during the holiday, Shentong said.
The Pudong New Area transport administration will arrange for 20 shuttle buses to travel the 4.5-kilometer route which is expected to take 10 to 15 minutes.
The interval time between each bus will be four minutes.
Dai Xing, director of the administration, said the shuttle services will be quick to avoid congestion at the stations.
A new Zhangjiang High-Tech Park station is to be built northeast of the current one which will be out of service after the extension opens. The new, underground station will be bigger than the old one.
