Metro set to offer free Wi-Fi to commuters

SHANGHAI’S Metro is testing Wi-Fi service on Line 8 and 13 with free services likely to be available for commuters in about two weeks.
Metro Line 8 passengers can access free Wi-Fi on the stations.
Service provider Shenzhen Peanut Technology Company said it has been testing Wi-Fi on a trial basis on the stations. The service is currently not available on the trains and the network disconnects as soon as commuters enter the carriage.
The current net speed is also not stable but allows users to browse through websites, and even watch online videos. Smartphones with ios system gets easily connected after providing a mobile number but android phone users have to download an application to access the network.
“It will be officially announced to the public in about two weeks,” Wang Kai, an official with Peanut Technology, told Shanghai Daily. By then, the trial service will be available on Line 4 as well. “Technically, there has been no obstacle arranging free Wi-Fi on both platforms and in trains,” Wang said. “We will work on detailed plans to handle large number of users during rush hours.”
The Wi-Fi service is likely to be available on 10 Metro lines in the beginning. Wang expects problems with speed initially. Commuters struggle to connect even to 2G or 3G networks along some Metro lines, especially on the crowded Line 1 and 2.
