Metro takes measures to handle crowd
METRO Line 16 has been forced to restrict commuters on some stations on the line and add extra trains on its section as it struggles to control the crowd during office hours.
Line 16 extended its route from Luoshan Road Station to Longyang Road Station at the end of last year. Trains for Longyang Road Station, the interchange station for Line 2 and 7, have been fully packed during morning office hours, made even more difficult by the three-carriage trains.
The Metro operator has been forced to restrict commuters’ movements by shutting down some turnstiles and restricting access to the stations.
The measures were introduced as early as 6:45am at Huinan, Xinchang and Heshahangcheng stations, which gave some space to commuters from other stations to get into the trains.
The restrictions were lifted before 8am after congestion on platforms eased a bit.
Since last week, the operator also added extra trains in the morning rush hour to the northward direction, in the process cutting down train interval from 8 minutes to 5 minutes.
The Metro operator, Shentong, said it will continue to monitor the passenger situation on the line. Line 16’s passenger capacity will be increased in the future when six-carriage trains are introduced. The operator however did not give a specific date when it would be introduced.
