Metro to open later on holiday eve
THE last trains on Metro Lines 1 and 2 will depart 80 minutes later than usual on September 30, the eve of the National Day holiday, to help meet demand from the increased passenger numbers, its operator said yesterday.
On Line 1, the final train from Xinzhuang station will leave at 11:52pm, instead of 10:32pm, while in the opposite direction the last train from Fujin Road will depart at 11:50pm, instead of 10:30pm, Shanghai Shentong Group said.
On Line 2, the last trains will leave Guanglan Road and Xujingdong stations at 0:05am, instead of the usual 22:45pm.
Lines 1 and 2 are the busiest lines on the Shanghai subway network, ferrying a combined 1 million passengers per day.
The city’s 14 Metro lines moved a record 9.4 million passengers on April 30, the eve of the May Day holiday.
Meanwhile, 104 bus routes with terminuses close to the affected Metro stations will also extend their operating hours on September 30, with some buses running as late as 1:20am (October 1). A detailed timetable is available at shygc.net.
It is hoped that the extra trains and buses will help people attending promotional activities at shopping malls and other venues get home. When taxis and other forms of public transport are scarce, illegal taxi operators thrive.
