Metro’s 4,000th carriage begins testing
THE city’s 4,000th Metro carriage — with advanced new safety features — was launched for testing yesterday, as the operator adds rolling stock and extends the network to cater for rapidly growing demand.
Over the past few years, Metro traffic has grown 10 percent annually and the network is due to be extended to 800 kilometers by 2020 from about 620km now. Another 1,000-2,000 carriages are expected to be added in the next two to three years.
The latest carriage will run along the third phase of Metro Line 9 after testing.
“It is also the first Metro carriage in Shanghai equipped with a water- and fire-proof black box data recorder,” said Xi Xiaodong, a maintenance officer with the Metro company, adding it is also more energy efficient and has new lighting and air conditioning systems.
The Metro operator is also extending the length of trains: services on Lines 1 and 2 have upgraded to eight carriages from six and Line 5 and Line 2’s eastern extension are also undergoing an upgrade to six carriages from four. The city’s first 95 carriages launched on Metro Line 1 in 1996.
