Minhang to build low-rent apartments
MINHANG authorities will build a series of low-rent apartments totaling 250,000 square meters this year. They will be reserved for 25,000 migrant workers in the suburban district with the biggest migrant population in Shanghai.
The residential buildings, funded by the district government and some of the companies employing these migrants, will cover 12 neighborhoods and towns in Minhang, Shanghai Oriental Morning Post reported today.
Monthly rents will be 150 yuan (US$22) to 200 yuan per person. Banks, post offices, supermarkets and bus stops will be close by. The residential areas will include a counseling service, family planning service, a migrant teenager center and a police station.
These buildings will include permanent and temporary use structures. Some will be converted from unused factories and warehouses. The areas are near their places of employment.
By March 2007, the migrant population in Minhang reached 920,000, surpassing the number of registered residents of 820,000, according to a previous report by Shanghai Business Daily.
Last July, the government of Pudong New Area started the city's first residential building project for migrant workers. The 13,400-square-meters project is expected to house 2,880 migrant workers.
