Moped rider sped off after crash

A MAN on a moped, who collided with a 75-year-old moped rider in Luwan District but left the scene, has been punished with detention and a fine, police said yesterday.

The 28-year-old, surnamed Wang from Hong Kong, was caught three days after he hit the 75-year-old, surnamed Zhang.

About 5pm on August 8, Zhang was driving across the intersection of Ruijin Road and Taikang Road, when he was hit.

Zhang said he was unable to move after the accident.

"I even begged him to help me up," he told police.

Zhang suffered a spinal fracture and may have to stay in bed for several months.

Police said Wang should take full responsibility as he had left the scene and failed to call for help.

He was detained for seven days and fined 500 yuan (US$73.85), but has also paid the victim's medical bills.
