More cameras fitted into public buses for surveillance

THE number of surveillance cameras on public buses has been increased from four to seven.

The new installations will not only help monitor operational safety but also record pictures of private vehicles occupying designated bus lanes, and assist the police in criminal investigations.

Four cameras can capture the image inside the bus, while the cameras on the front and rear ends can capture image on the outside.

Jingao bus company in the Pudong New Area said it had received 316 surveillance footage requests from local police since 2014. It helped in solving about 20 cases, a company official told Shanghai Morning Post.

On June 10 and June 14 this year, there were two cases of thefts on the No. 790 bus. The footages from the bus helped police in solving the case and goods worth 20,000 yuan were returned to the passengers.

“Buses play an important role in the city’s public transportation. Buses during rush hour and bus stops are prone to thefts,” Jingao’s business unit manager told the newspaper.

Bashi bus company said the cameras will also help to monitor the performances of bus drivers.

Violations such as running red lights, speeding, changing lanes randomly, smoking or chitchatting while driving, driving on wrong lanes, not making way for zebra lines, and driving while talking on the phone will all be recorded, the company said.

The cameras at the front end of the bus will record private vehicles on bus lanes. As per regulations, only public buses are allowed on bus lanes from 7am-9am and 4pm-7pm every day.
