More people take buses for holiday
MORE than 260,000 people took long-distance buses at the weekend for the tomb-sweeping holiday, 33 percent more than last year, the city's two major coach stations said yesterday.
Two new bridges increased demand, said the transport authority. The Sutong Bridge, across the Yangtze River in Jiangsu Province, and the Hangzhou Bay Bridge, in Zhejiang Province, has improved the provincial traffic network to facilitate more coach services.
Shanghai South Coach Station reported a 27-percent increase in the number of services provided by provincial coach companies on the weekend. In the peak period, buses were leaving for Hangzhou, a popular Zhejiang Province destination during the festival, every three minutes - three times the usual rate, said station officials.
Many city residents headed for the suburbs to enjoy flower shows during the holiday.
