More sleet as cold front pushes down mercury

EXPECT the sleet that hit yesterday afternoon to continue today and the cold front hitting the city to bring freezing temperatures by tomorrow, forecasters said.

Suburban Chongming County was hit by sleet at about 4pm, and it gradually spread over the rest of the city.

By 8:20pm, most of the city saw between 1 and 4 millimeters of rain and snow. Suburban Jinshan District was hit with 4.4 millimeters of precipitation. The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued a yellow road-ice-warning‚ the lowest of the city’s three-color alert system‚ at 7:06pm last night because of the possibility of ice forming on the streets within 12 hours.

By 10pm last night, speed control measures had been implemented in anticipation of icy conditions on expressways and bridges, and salt was scattered on Lupu Bridge at 9.15pm to melt snow.

Light snow was forecast for this morning, with temperatures ranging between 1 and 4 degrees Celsius.

No snow is expected tomorrow, but the temperature is forecast to dip down to zero.

It will begin to warm up on Wednesday, say forecasters, with a low of 1 degree and a high of 6. The warming trend will continue on Thursday with some drizzle expected.

Higher temperatures are expected by Friday, with the mercury fluctuating between 3 and 8 degrees, and the skies clearing.

Thursday is known as Lichun, or spring begins, the first solar term of the year. It signifies the beginning of spring, when eastern winds begin to melt ice and hibernating insects wake up.
