More sun today, but rain is just around the corner

WITH a high of 23.9 degrees Celsius, yesterday was officially the hottest day of the year so far. Despite some showers, locals enjoyed lots of sunshine, and more of the same is in store for today, forecasters said.

Temperatures today are set to peak at 24 degrees and shouldn’t fall below 12 degrees at any point, they said. But the balmy days won’t last.

Light rain is expected tomorrow due to the last of the warm air hitting a cold front. The high will fall to 13 degrees, with a low of 9, which in turn could jeopardize the chances of forecasters announcing the arrival of spring. The season is deemed to have officially arrived when the average daily temperature remains above 10 degrees for five consecutive days. By the end of today, there is likely to have been four such days.

“If Wednesday’s temperatures change as we predict, it’s possible for the average temperature to top 10 degrees,” said Man Liping, a chief service officer at the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

“That would make Saturday (March 15) the start of the meteorological spring,” she said.

Spring or not, sunshine and clouds are on the cards for Thursday through Saturday.
