More taxi stands to take vacant cabs off traffic

TAXI stands will be set up in busy areas in downtown Shanghai to improve taxi services, road efficiency and urban environment as well, the local transport authority said today.

A pilot program will be under way in Huangpu and Jing?ˉan districts and it will be gradually introduced to other districts, officials said.

Taxi stands, a queue area where taxis line up to wait for passengers, will be set up in high-traffic locations like Metro stations. Taxis will be allowed to park inside the stations to wait for customers.

They will be much larger in size than existing taxi stands and may have assistants to keep order and help passengers, the officials said.

The city?ˉs number of taxi stands plunged from a peak of 1,000 to just about 70 today due to bad locations and people?ˉs habit to flag down cabs anywhere they are. The officials believe the new scheme will enable cabbies to find more customers and wait legally at Metro stations.
