More tourists go sightseeing
MORE than 70.000 tourists left Chinese mainland for sightseeing from Shanghai last year, an increase of 6.86 percent from a year before, according to a report issued today at a city forum on outbound tourism.
Of the 736,391 outbound tourists, 554,269 went to overseas countries, up 8.11 percent year on year.
Nearly 400,000 went to Asian countries and more than 57,000 visited Europe.
Japan, Thailand and Singapore were the three most popular destinations and France and Italy were the two favorite European countries.
The city's outbound tourism industry saw its monthly business surge more than 30 percent in January, April, June and July and drop in August because of the Beijing Olympics as many people chose to stay at home for the event. But business boomed again in December
