More trains to cover Qingming
THE city’s Metro operator will add more trains and introduce traffic control measures at some stations to meet the huge traffic demand of tomb sweepers around Qingming Festival as well as providing extra help for visitors to flower festivals.
It is a tradition that people sweeping tombs pay tribute to their ancestors during Qingming, which this year falls on April 4. The tradition is that a family has to sweep the tomb on the exact date of Qingming Festival in the first three years after a member of the family has died, and then choose other dates earlier than the festival after the third year, often within two weeks ahead of Qingming.
The Metro is expected to see large tomb sweeper traffic this weekend, next weekend and during the Qingming Festival holiday, from April 2 to 4, the operator said. The peak day is expected to be April 4.
To handle the numbers, major cemeteries in the city will provide a free shuttle bus service from Saturday next week to ferry passengers traveling between the cemeteries and Metro stations nearby.
The shuttle bus service will cover 14 stations on seven Metro lines, including lines 2, 5, 8 and 9.
