More unisex toilets on cards

SHANGHAI will add another 160-170 unisex public toilets by the end of next year — most of them in downtown, shopping areas and scenic spots, the city’s greenery authorities said yesterday, ahead of World Toilet Day tomorrow.

There are about 40 unisex public toilets in the city at present, which are mostly used by seniors, the disabled or mothers accompanying children, said Yao Gang, deputy director of the Shanghai Public Sanitation and Environment Quality Monitoring Center affiliated to the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau.

Most of the new unisex toilets will be modified from existing lavatories, Yao said.

The unisex toilets are designed in a manner that they can be used by parents with both male or female children and adults accompanying seniors or disabled people of both sexes who need help.
