Mostly cloudy as catkin season begins

IT will be cloudy or overcast today and tomorrow, but the rain will return on Friday night, forecasters said yesterday.

The temperature today will range between 15 degrees Celsius and 24 degrees, and fog is expected in some areas early in the day, according to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

Tomorrow will see a high of 25 degrees and it will range between 13 and 19 degrees on Friday.

The rain is expected to continue on Saturday, with a low of 14 and a high of 20.

Sunday and Monday will be wet as well. The temperature on Sunday will range between 14 and 19 degrees.

Meanwhile, the city has entered catkin season.

A catkin is a spike of unisexual, apetalous flowers produced by trees such as the willow or poplar.

Catkins have been seen in some areas and roads in the city, including Fuxing Rd M., Shaanxi Rd S., Hengshan Road and Huaihai Rd M, where willow and poplar trees have been planted, according to the Shanghai Greenery Management Station.

Experts said the catkins will linger for about a month, but not in very large numbers due to control measures.

“The catkin is a natural phenomenon, and it will begin to decline in May,” said Zhang Guobing, an expert with the station.

Shanghai has limited the number of newly planted willows since 2000, and most planted in parks are along the river, which most of the catkins are blown into by the wind, he said.

Plane trees are a major source of catkins in downtown areas, but they are trimmed between December and March every year, reducing the number they produce.

In addition, several districts, including Songjiang and Hongkou, have experimented with injecting a liquid agent into trees to curb catkin production, resulting in a 90 percent decrease in the number produced, said Zhang.
