Mother and son killed as trucks collide on highway
TWO people were killed when a pickup truck collided with a flatbed truck on a Shanghai expressway yesterday.
The pickup truck driver and his mother died while his father was injured and sent to a hospital.
The father, surnamed Gong, sustained cuts and bruises on his head but was listed in stable condition, doctors said. Gong, 64, said his son was 38 years old.
"It never occurred to me the accident would happen," said Gong, tears running down his cheek.
Gong said the family was returning from Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province.
The accident happened about 5:30am on S5 Expressway. A witness said the pickup truck crashed into the rear of the flatbed truck.
The three were stuck inside the pickup truck until emergency workers arrived.
The driver and his mother were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said they are still investigating the cause of the accident and added that traffic on the expressway returned to normal by noon.
Gong said his son went to Nanjing for work while he and his wife went along for fun.
Meanwhile, city traffic police said traffic on the Middle Ring Road was backed up yesterday morning after a 10-vehicle collision. There were no reports of casualties.
