Nervous driver hits policeman

A POLICEMAN was injured yesterday morning after a driver stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake.

Zhang Guowei suffered a fracture to his left knee.

Witnesses said the accident happened about 8:15am on the Middle Ring Road in Yangpu District. A middle-aged woman was driving a red Nissan without license plates on the elevated expressway near Jungong Road.

"It's banned for vehicles to run without license plates on elevated road in rush hours," said Zhang. "That's why I signaled it to stop for a check."

However, the vehicle didn't stop but instead, sped straight toward Zhang, knocking him down.

The woman told police that she felt so nervous when she saw the officer that she mistakenly stepped on the gas.
