New IDs for booking fast train tickets

SHANGHAI railway authorities said yesterday that three kinds of IDs, including passports and passes for Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan residents, are now being accepted for booking tickets on high-speed bullet trains via a ticket hotline system.

Railway officials said the hotline system has been upgraded to allow new types of IDs and certificates, the latest measure to boost services before a real-name policy comes into force on June 1, ahead of the launch of the Shanghai-Beijing high-speed rail route later the same month.

The hotline, "95105105," launched in late 2009, only accepted Chinese mainland citizens' ID cards before.

The hotline is primarily for people living in Shanghai and neighboring Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Anhui Provinces, the Shanghai Railway Bureau said. After the upgrade, students can also book student tickets during summer and winter.

Officials also reminded passengers that they need to provide their ID card number when booking tickets for trains starting with the initials "G", and "D" as the department requires real-name purchase for these categories of fast trains. According to the policy, aimed at curbing ticket scalping and improving security, one legal certificate will buy one ticket for one trip.

However, many passengers have complained that they have never been able to get through the hotline. Railway officials explained that the hotline has been "very busy."

No English service is available for now though it is under consideration.
