New Metro Emergency Procedures

A second driver will travel on all Metro trains in rush hours while emergency response procedures will be changed in efforts to smooth operations on an increasingly stressed Metro system.

Metro traffic is usually heaviest in the hot months. On Friday patronage jumped to 4 million from a daily average of 3.6 million a week ago.

In rush hours an apprentice driver will travel with the driver to communicate with the control center and coordinate emergency responses if there are problems.

The operator will also try to avoid immediate evacuations when doors fail by sending staff, whenever possible and safe, to the troubled carriage to guard the failed door and passengers until the train gets to the terminal.
