New Metro transfer hub for lines 3, 4, 9

Shanghai will build an underground traffic hub in Xuhui District next year to enable locals to transit more easily between Metro lines 3, 4 and 9.

The transition hub will come up near the Yishan Road Metro station and is expected to be ready by 2016.

Commuters then will no longer need to walk a long way to transfer between Metro lines, an official with the city’s construction and traffic commission said yesterday.

Currently, travelers have to walk for about 10 minutes to transit between Metro lines 3, 4 and 9. The long march includes a high 43-step staircase without escalator as well as puzzling crossroads both on and under the ground.

A construction site has been prepared on Yishan and Kaixuan roads as big as a football field with barriers erected around them.

“The traffic hub will include many stores and restaurants, and connect to nearby office buildings,” a project manager for the planned project said.

All the bus lines in the area that are scattered round the Metro station will enter and exit from the underground hub so that commuters can transit more conveniently.

Meanwhile, authorities said construction of the eastern extension of Metro Line 9 will begin soon. Work is expected to be completed by the end of 2017, adding another 17 kilometers of track and 10 stations.

Jinqiao in the Pudong New Area will be covered by the extension. The line starts at Yanggao Road and ends at Caolu Railway Station.
