New roads to be built in Jiading
MORE roads and highways are being built in Jiading District to help speed up traffic in the area that is the gateway to Jiangsu Province, local authorities said yesterday.
Of 32 roads planned to connect Jiading to bordering districts, 19 are now under construction.
A total of 50 connecting roads will be completed by the end of 2012.
Some of the district's north-south roads in poor condition will also be repaired.
Meanwhile, Lu Shuhua, a Qingpu District Construction Committee official, said Jiamin Elevated Road, which ends at the Hongqiao Transport Hub, will be extended north, enabling people to use the hub to reach northern parts of Shanghai and Jiangsu. Construction of the extension will start in October.
Lu said authorities are also considering widening the S5 Expressway or building an elevated road above it due to traffic congestion. He said S5 traffic is almost "paralyzed" from 4pm to 7pm every day.
