New system green-lights buses
TRAFFIC lights will turn green or stay green longer when buses are near as part of a test of a "bus first" smart transportation system along downtown Xizang Road S. later this year, officials said yesterday.
While the green lights would benefit all traffic near a bus, the new technology would change the traffic light to normal operation after the bus passes.
"The new Internet of Things technologies will improve the whole city's urban intelligent traffic system, like encouraging more public transportation and reducing traffic jams," said Yu Hong, technology director of the Shanghai SEARI Intelligent System Co, a major IT provider for the city's transit authority.
The test area includes landmarks like the Shanghai Museum.
The Internet of Things technologies also are used to monitor traffic and adjust lanes and signals on highways, according to Yang Xiaoguang, professor at the Tongji University.
