New tunnel to end road chaos in Hongqiao airport
ANOTHER underground vehicle tunnel will be built to connect the two terminal buildings of the Hongqiao International Airport and ease traffic flow in the area, Shanghai Urban Construction Group told Shanghai Daily today.
The Yingbin No. 3 Road Tunnel is a key facility for the Hongqiao Integrated Transportation Hub and will cut the travel between the east and west ends of the airport from 30 minutes to just a few minutes.
A 14-meter-diameter tunnel boring machine has already drilled half way and is passing under the emergency-landing area of the airport's eastern runway, a company official said.
The 1,860-meter-long, four-lane tunnel starts from Shenkun Road on the west end to link with the Outer Ring Road on the east end. Drivers will also find it easy to steer their vehicles to parking areas at both terminals.
"Drivers passing the area won't need to take a detour anymore with the new shortcut," said the company official.
The Xianxia Road W. Tunnel, also running past the airport area in the north, opened to traffic earlier this year.
The company also revealed that the long-awaited Jungong Road Tunnel is expected to open to traffic later next month. The tunnel under the Huangpu River connects the Middle Ring Road on both sides of the river.
Workers have installed more than 85 percent of the equipment in the tunnel. Its opening will greatly improve the efficiency of the Middle Ring Road, an elevated expressway circling the downtown area, and relieve pressure on the Xiangyin Road Tunnel which is clogged every day.
