New water reservoir in service to benefit 6.7m suburban residents

THE Jinze Reservoirhas started supplying cleaner water today to some 6.7 million residents in Shanghai’s suburban districts and also to serve as a main backup water source for downtown residents.

About one-fourth of Shanghai residents in southwest suburbs can gradually get to use cleaner water supplied by the new reservoir within a month which started operation today.

The city's vice mayor Chen Yin triggered an operating arm together with other city officials today during a ceremony.

Currently, suburban districts get their tap water from the middle Huangpu River, which has poor quality and a higher pollution risk.

The new reservoir, covering 2.7 square kilometers — equivalent to 250 football pitches — is safer, according to the water authority.

Over 6.7 million residents in these districts will be benefited from the new water source which is cleaner and more reliable.

The operation of the Jinze Reservoir marks a milestone that all the city's water sources are taken from reservoirs rather than from middle of rivers directly, which is in poor quality and at high risk from pollution.

Ship collision, chemical leakage and pollution accidents often happen along the Huangpu River, threatening the water safety near the water intakes.

With the new Jinze reservoir on Taipu River, the cleanest upstream branch of the Huangpu River, the threats from the accidents can be prevented.

The reservoir will be able to shut its two intakes while maintaining supplies for three days in the case of any shipping accident. In addition, the link with the Qingcaosha reservoir can supply water to the Jinze reservoir for another day.

The Jinze reservoir is one of the four major water sources in addition to the Qingcaosha, Dongfeng Xisha and Chenghang reservoirs and the only source on the Huangpu.

Pipelines have connected the three major reservoirs, Jinze, Qingcaosha and Chenhang, so that Jinze can supply water from Huangpu to the other two reservoirs in case the water quality in Yangtze is affected.

Previously, the Huangpu River was the only water source for Shanghai residents.

In future, the water authority will plant more water plants and vegetables in the reservoir to purify the raw water ecologically, Meng said.
