North America appeals to tourists

NORTH America is becoming an increasingly popular destination for Shanghai travelers, with figures doubling last year.

The number of organized travelers from Shanghai to North America increased to 50,800 in the past year, according to the 2011 Regional Analysis of China's Outbound Tourism released yesterday at the Shanghai World Travel Fair.

"North America appeals strongly to Shanghai outbound travelers, although it was opened relatively late," said Li Bincheng, an official from the Shanghai Tourism Administration.

Li said this popularity was because a US tourist visa now allows multiple entries for Chinese travelers in a year, and the Chinese yuan has appreciated against US dollars.

In addition to the America market, travel to Europe also boomed in 2010.

Arrivals from Shanghai to Europe increased by 86,400 to 150,400 last year and its share increased to 16.81 percent.

However, numbers travelling to Australia and New Zealand fell.

Their share of tourism decreased to 5.29 percent from 8.39 percent in 2009.
