Now longer Suzhou Creek cruise returns

THE Suzhou Creek cruise, which resumes service on Sunday, will cost 200 yuan (US$31.75) for a round trip and 120 yuan for a one-way trip between the Danba Road Dock and the Waibaidu Bridge in Huangpu District, officials said yesterday.

The trip, affording views of historic and modern buildings on both sides of the stream, has been stopped for a year due to dredging of the creek. The new cruise route will be extended to 19 kilometers from the former 10 kilometers and a full round trip will take three hours, said Lin Yong, general manager of the Shanghai Suzhou Creek Sightseeing Co.

"A night trip will also be opened, which will offer a totally different experience with lights on buildings and trees on both sides of the creek," Lin said.

Each boat will be equipped with GPS technology to broadcast the introductions on different sections of the river automatically. Two kinds of boats can be chosen - a sealed boat that can take 25 passengers or an open-air one with nine seats.

The cruise will wind its way under 12 bridges and pass historical buildings such as the former Shanghai Flour Co and Sihang Warehouse, said Chen Min, director of the Changfeng Ecology Commercial Park management committee of Putuo District, who is in charge of the cruise.

"Passengers will be able to view the legacy of China's early industries ... it will be a window into the history of Shanghai's economic development," said Chen.

A shorter 1.5-hour round trip between the Danba Road Dock and the Changhua Road Dock in Putuo District will cost 130 yuan, according to the operator.
