Numbers of mothers-to-be register at major local maternity hospitals rise by 50 percent this year
NUMBERS of pregnant women registered at local major maternity hospitals have grown by over 50 percent this year after the nation allows all couples to have a second child, health authorities said today.
Officials from Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Hospital said 17,639 women registered for the first prenatal service in the first half of this year, rising by 57 percent than the same time last year. The Gynecology and Obstetrics Hospital of Fudan University said pregnant women registered for prenatal service in May grew by 55 percent than the same month last year.
Among the pregnant women, those who are aged over 35 and have a history of cesarean section rose quickly.
According to the National Health and Family Planning Commission, about 60 percent of women from couples eligible for a second child are aged over 35 years old, which is considered risky for pregnancy and child delivery.
The local health authority, family service industry association and IPTV today also announced to launch a free television program to promote knowledge of reproductive health and child raising.
