Oblong tunnel digger goes down great
A NEW type of tunnel boring machine (TBM) that produces rectangular structures yesterday completed its first major project in Shanghai.
The scheme, which involved the creation of a 28-meter-long access tunnel between two car parks located beneath Fuquan Road in the Hongqiao area of Changning District was completed in just 20 days, said Hang Yingwei, deputy president of Shanghai Construction Group, the company that built the machine.
The TBM was developed over a period of four years with the help of Tongji University, said Wu Xinzhi, the company’s deputy chief engineer.
Its next challenge will be to create a pedestrian tunnel linking the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Qingpu District and the Hongqiao Business Zone, Hang said.
The main advantage of the rectangular design — most TBMS are circular — is that it can be fitted with more cutting blades, which means it digs faster, Hang said.
It is also designed to be quieter than traditional TBMs and have less impact on the surrounding infrastructure, he said.
Rectangular tunnels also offer more space than round ones of a similar height, which adds to their appeal, Hang said.
