Off-duty police officer killed in scooter smash
AN off-duty police officer died yesterday morning when the scooter he was riding was hit by a dump truck in a car lane in the city's northeast Yangpu District.
The victim, surnamed Ji, was an officer in the district, police said.
The driver of the truck, surnamed Fei, was taken for questioning as part of the investigation, police said.
The accident occurred about 7:26am at the junction of Jungong Road and Jiamusi Road, in front of the Shanghai Machine Tool Works Ltd, as the truck was turning left, witnesses said.
Ji was on the truck's right side and was struck by its right rear wheel.
The 40-year-old officer was knocked to the ground and his electric scooter smashed in the collision, witnesses said.
Ji was in critical condition after the crash and was pronounced dead at hospital, police said.
There is no cycle or scooter lane on that section of Jungong Road. The case was under police investigation yesterday.
Despite being prohibited, many cyclists and scooter riders were still traveling on the Middle Ring Road yesterday.
The case sparked discussion on the Internet about provision for cyclists and scooter riders on the city's roads.
"Everyone knows we should obey the traffic rules but residents need to go out," said web user "Tower_D" on Weibo.com microblog.
"There are a lot of people living around elevated roads and not many have cars."
