Officials play it safe as record numbers take Metro
EXTRA officials, armed police officers and sniffer dogs were out in force yesterday as the city’s subway network geared up for a busy New Year’s Eve.
As of 10:40pm last night, the Metro had handled more than 10 million people, a record high, and more than a million more than last year, officials said.
Ning Jiawei, an official working at People’s Square station — one of the biggest interchanges on the system, told Shanghai Daily yesterday that he and 12 colleagues would be on patrol throughout the day.
“There have also been about 40 armed police officers helping out, mostly guarding the escalators during the rush hour periods,” Ning said.
Sniffer dogs were brought in to help find potentially dangerous items like flammable liquids and explosives, he said.
“To protect against a major incident, the officials are carrying essential equipment, such as a radio, handcuffs, a baton and tear gas,” Ning said.
“The evening peak came much earlier than usual today,” said a second official, Zhou Jiaxin.
“But you can split it into three distinct parts,” he said.
“The first was when people were heading home from work, the second will come between 9 and 10pm as people finish their New Year’s Eve dinners, and the third from midnight onward after people have enjoyed the countdown events,” Zhou said.
Ning said that if the crowds become too heavy on the platforms, officials will take steps to ease the flows.
“We can take measures such as limiting the number of people allowed into the station,” he said.
As well as the extra security measures, the Metro operator extended train operating times yesterday.
On Lines 1 and 2 the final trains departed at 12:25am.
