Oh yeah, spring finally arrives

SPRING has officially arrived, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said last night.

Under the bureau's criteria, spring arrives when the average temperature reaches 10 degrees Celsius for five consecutive days. The first of those five days is then considered the first day of spring.

The average temperature reached 10.1 degrees on March 26, the official start of spring this year, the bureau said.

It added that spring arrived later than usual this year. During the last decade, the average start was March 11.

According to the bureau's records, which date back 137 years, the city's earliest spring arrived on February 14 in 1898. The latest was in 1972, when it arrived on April 15.

The nice weather is expected to continue today and tomorrow with sunny skies mixed with a few clouds. The temperature should reach a high of 21 degrees tomorrow.

However, the mercury will drop to a high of 13 degrees this weekend with a low of 7 to 9 degrees, the bureau said.
