Old toilet signs flushed

JING'AN District has moved to clear up potty confusion on Nanjing Road W.

The district has introduced standard signs for all public toilets on the street. The signs feature a standard image of a man in a suit and a woman in a skirt to help travelers find toilets easier.

Old signs used a pipe to represent the men's toilet and high-heel shoes to indicate the ladies' room.

The district began standardizing signs according to international practice in March.

"It is a good beginning. It makes the city more international and it's more clear and convenient for foreigners," said Jennifer Dong, a customer in Plaza 66.

However, some people said the old toilet signs added "charm" to the city and made it more unique.
