Online offer for personalized plates

AFTER October 1 Shanghai's private car owners will not have to queue overnight for personalized number plates.

Police said today that an online car number plate service will be launched at www.shanghai.gov.cn.

The platform at the Website provides comprehensive information for vehicle owners and drivers, including information about vehicle purchasing, license plates, driver's licenses, traffic violation records, online registration for driving tests and online consultations.

A similar phone license plate service is expected to be introduced early next year.

Private car owners have been able to choose personalized car plates since October 6 last year. Police said some applicants arrived very early in the morning and others queued overnight.

A private car driver in Liaoning Province in northeastern China queued for more than 48 hours outside a police license office for an "A88A88" number plate on September 26.

Owners and drivers can apply for vehicle licenses and drivers' licenses at service stations in Pudong and Puxi from today. Previously vehicle owners had to go to No. 2,638 Hunan Road in Pudong and drivers had to go to No. 179 Qinchun Road in Xinzhuang for licenses.
