Orange alert as city swelters
THE city was given an orange temperature alert this morning with the thermometer expected to hit 37 degrees Celsius today.
But there is good news - tomorrow will see the temperature drop to 32 degrees with a low of 26 degrees, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.
High temperature alerts are yellow, orange or red depending on the level predicted.
Forecasters said the plum rain season ended yesterday and the rain belt that hovered above the city during the plum rains has moved to Huaihe Valley in neighboring Anhui and Jiangsu provinces as a subtropical high strengthens.
Yesterday the temperature reached 36.1 degrees and power demand peaked at more than 20 million kilowatts, the highest this year, Shanghai Electric Company said.
