Parents left baffled at closure of kids’ club
AN investigation is under way into the abrupt closure of a learning club for children in Huangpu District after dozens of parents were left out of pocket.
The Huangpu District Industrial and Commercial Administrative Bureau said that as of yesterday it had received complaints from 18 people who said they had paid in advance for lessons at the Kishow Children’s Club on Jianguo Road W.
Officials said they are trying to trace the owners of the business.
Parents were left nonplussed after going to the school with their youngsters on Sunday only to find it had closed. A note in the window said that all classes had been temporarily suspended.
A woman surnamed Xu said her child had been attending the school since last year and really enjoyed it. As a result, she recently paid 12,400 yuan (US$2,000) for a full year of classes.
Another woman, surnamed Ding, said she paid more than 4,000 yuan on May 18 for a course of 28 classes.
“My child hasn’t had a single lesson, and now the place has closed,” she said.
Several people told Shanghai Daily that the club had been open as normal on the weekend of May 17-18.
Staff at Kishow Children’s Club outlets in Minhang and Baoshan districts said they had no idea why the Huangpu center had closed, adding that all of the businesses are operated independently of each other.
The Huangpu Consumer Rights Protection Commission said it too had received complaints about the closure of the kids’ club and will aid the investigation.
