Parking spots increased
THIRTY-FIVE parking spaces will be made available near the Nanjing Road Pedestrian Mall to address the parking difficulty in the downtown area, local traffic authorities said yesterday.
The parking spaces will only be available on weekends so parked cars do not exacerbate weekday traffic. The parking spaces will be supervised by management staff, officials said.
A total of 40 other parking spaces are set up every night on Yunnan Road, and on Fangbang Road M. and Longmen Road at weekends.
After a pilot run, police may promote the idea of temporary parking spaces around hospitals and schools, and other places where parking difficulties are common, officers said.
With the increasing amount of vehicles on the city's roads, parking problems are getting worse. Due to limited parking resources, many drivers park their cars on roads illegally during holidays and at weekends, which increases the risks of traffic accidents.
A total of 2,231 parking spaces have been created in the city since last September and 1,310 more will be set up before the 2010 World Expo.
