Parks plan for crowded city district

TO improve the quality of life in one of the Shanghai’s most heavily populated areas, Minhang District plans to build a major forest park along the Huangpu River and a batch of smaller parks by 2020, the district government said yesterday.
The first phase of the Pujiang Country Park, which will cover around 1.7 square kilometers, will be completed in Pujiang Town by mid-2017, providing one of the closest green getaways to downtown Shanghai.
“The average greenery land for each Minhang resident will be increased to 10 square meters from the current 9 square meters by 2020,” said Zhang Guokun, deputy governor of the district.
The district government yesterday released its 13th Five-Year (2016-2020) Plan, which also includes blueprints for its transport development.
A total of 5 square kilometers of parkland will be created across the district along with 3 square kilometers of forest by 2020, Zhang said.
In addition to the major park, many smaller “pocket parks” will be established in residential communities.
On the transport front, four additional Metro lines will be built in the district by 2020, including the western stretch of Line 13, a southern extension for Line 5, the third phase of Line 8 and the new Line 15 to serve the Zizhu High-Tech Industrial Park.
Several new highways, including one linking Minhang and Jiading districts, as well as tunnels crossing the Huangpu River will be built by 2020 to reduce traffic congestion, said Wang Jianfeng, deputy director of the district’s transport commission.
Moreover, the district will improve bus service. Over 90 percent of the residential community will have a bus station within 500 meters by 2020.
