Passage link for railway station

THE Shanghai West Railway Station is set to get a new lease of life with the opening of a major underground passageway next month.

This will help create a transport hub around the Putuo District station, improving access to the Line 11 Metro station situated there, said officials

The 15,000-square-meter passageway with retail space will link areas north and south of the 109-year-old station, Shanghai’s fourth largest.

Currently, 100,000 residents in nearby Wanli and Dahua areas find it quicker to walk 30 minutes to Line 11’s Liziyuan Station than use the Metro station at the Shanghai West Railway Station.

And above the underground area is a public square.

Five bus lines will resume operations on Shuiquan Road, following the completion of work that began in 2010.

The station closed for renovations in 2006, reopening in 2010. It is a stop on the high-speed line to Nanjing.
