Passengers delayed for 30 minutes

A BROKEN Metro train door caused a 30-minute delay yesterday, leaving thousands of passengers stranded during morning rush hour.

It was the second lengthy delay on Line 8 since last Saturday.

The delay began about 8:15am and the line was not back to normal until 8:50am, Metro officials said.

Even after the door was fixed, there were longer than normal stops at some stations.

"I felt suffocated in a crowded and hot carriage," said Wang Jia, a logistics company worker.

His journey from Nenjiang Road to People's Square took more than an hour in contrast to the usual 30 minutes.

The subway operator, Shanghai Shentong Group, apologized for the delay and offered ticket refunds. It said the breakdown was a result of an overcrowded carriage.

Meanwhile, subway builders said yesterday that the construction of Line 11 will be finished by December 25.
