Pay your workers, officials say

AUTHORITIES are working together to ensure migrant workers are paid wages before going home to celebrate the Spring Festival that kicks off on January 28.
The campaign involves 16 authorities, including the Shanghai Human Resources and Social Security Bureau, Shanghai Public Security Bureau and the Shanghai Higher People’s Court. Inspections are being carried out on construction companies and labor-intensive factories, where large numbers of workers from outside the city work.
Rules are being imposed to stop employers transferring money to prevent paying salaries on time.
Statistics from Shanghai No.2 Intermediate People’s Court showed it had accepted 2,542 labor disputes to June. More than half concerned migrant workers, in many cases over unpaid wages. The court has opened a WeChat account offering migrant workers access to advice from Qiao Beihua, a veteran judge in dealing with labor disputes.
