Pipeline upgrading a fifth of the way to completion

SHANGHAI Water Authority has replaced or renovated rusty pipelines to improve tap water quality in an area described as covering 25 million square meters, accounting for about 18 percent of the city’s planned pipeline upgrading.

Pipes that don’t rust have been installed, along with new meters and pump stations. Exposed pipes, valves and meters in residential buildings have been properly insulated and protected with non-toxic, odorless, fireproof and waterproof materials.

Residents will notice clearer water once the renovation work is completed, an official with the authority said.

“The tap water was sometimes unclear as the pipes have been used for over decades, but it looks better now after the renovation,” said Shen Jinfa, who lives in Jianhua Mansion in Putuo District.

Though most of the city gets its tap water from Qingcaosha Reservoir, the water quality, despite being clean at source, suffers from being transported via old pipes. Furthermore, many residents last January reported water pipes freezing and bursting during the worst cold snap to hit the city in 35 years.

The city’s water supply hotline received more than 20,000 calls from residents complaining about frozen or burst pipes in just one week in late January, when the mercury dropped to minus 7 degrees Celsius, according to Shanghai Chengtou Group, the city’s major water operator.

The city’s weather forecasters also expect this winter’s temperatures to be colder than average.

The material used to coat the pipes during the renovation program can allow the pipes to continue to function even when the mercury drops below minus 10 degrees.

A total of 140 million square meters of residential houses will have their tap water pipelines renovated by 2020, according to the authority. The renovation program covers all residential buildings built before 2000.
