Plum rain season on the way

THE plum rain season is expected to hit the city in the next few days and temperatures will remain high.

The rest of this week will be humid and cloudy with sporadic thunderstorms in the late afternoon or early evening. Temperatures will stay between 31 and 33 degrees, according to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

The plum rain season occurs when cold and hot air streams meet in the early summer forming a rain belt over the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. The recent rain in the city is not plum rain – there's still some time before the season begins, experts say.

In Shanghai the season generally starts on June 15 and ends on July 9 with an average 244 millimeters of rain.
