Police catch man who pulled emergency brake on subway trains
A man who pulled an emergency brake twice within one hour on Metro Line 2 without authorization yesterday has been caught and is in custody, Shanghai police said today.
Police said they are still investigating the incidents, adding they believe the man may have a mental disease.
The first incident occurred about 6:41pm yesterday when a brake on a train was pulled at Shanghai Science and Technology Museum Station. A similar incident happened at Lujiazui Station at about 7:40pm.
Thousands of passengers were affected as trains were halted for about 10 minutes, the Metro operator said.
The man was caught last night, police said.
City police and the subway operator have frequently warned riders about using the emergency brake.
Violators will be fined once they are found using the equipment without authorization. Violators will face legal charges if their conduct leads to mishaps or severe consequences.
