Police colleague tribute as 2 die on road

A TRAFFIC police officer was killed yesterday when he was struck by a container truck on an expressway in suburban Fengxian District.

A woman also died in the accident and two people were injured, police said. The injured were in stable condition in a local hospital last night.

The truck driver, surnamed Chen, was placed under police custody following the accident.

The officer, Cao Jinyu, was handling a traffic violation case when he was hit by the vehicle, police said.

The accident happened at 2pm as Cao was on the emergency hard shoulder lane inspecting a truck over a suspected violation.

As Cao examined the vehicle, a second truck came from behind, smashing into the back of the parked vehicle and hitting Cao.

Cao was severely injured and pronounced dead in hospital, police said.

A woman, surnamed Sun, in the second truck, was also killed in the collision, officers said. A traffic assistant and the driver of the stationary truck were injured.

Soon afterward, Cao's colleagues and other city police officers extended their condolence online via microblogs, mourning the officer they described as "very kind and always with a smile on his face."

Cao, a former soldier, joined the local expressway police team late last year and was a hard-working and dedicated officers, said a colleague.

Police are conducting campaigns against speeding, overloading and driver fatigue at toll stations.

Many trucks were later still found to be driving fast as they approached the toll where the accident happened.

Also yesterday, 20 passengers in a shuttle bus van were slightly injured in a collision with a bus at about 6pm on the Middle Ring Road.
